Top tips for mastering networking

April 14, 2015

Networking: It’s enough to trigger clammy palms amongst even the most savvy and experienced business professionals.

However, with research* from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg indicating that networking can contribute to career growth over time and that those who network are more satisfied in their working life, it pays to become a master of the networking world.

Here, Kawana Waters Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KWCCI) People and Events Coordinator Vanessa Webster shares her top tips for networking like a pro.

1. Prepare your pitch
The age-old elevator pitch is critical in helping develop interest in your business. Prepare a 15-second summary outlining who you are and what you do. Be concise and be sure to say it with enthusiasm.

2. Pick a number
It’s easy to get caught up in one conversation and miss the opportunity to engage with other business professionals. Pick how many meaningful conversations you want to have throughout an event (three is generally a happy medium) and commit to engaging with this many people, even if that means excusing yourself from one conversation to join another.

3. Ask questions
If nerves are getting the better of you and you’re feeling uncomfortable about the spotlight being on you during a conversation, ask other attendees questions about their business and industry. Getting to know them a bit better will help to put you at ease and learn something new, and they’ll most likely be grateful for the opportunity to tell you about what they’ve been working on.

4. Play to your strengths
If you’re someone that struggles to communicate well in large crowds, focus on participating in a number of smaller group or one-on-one conversations where you’ll be more likely to speak up.

5. Remember, you’re not alone
Chances are that if you’re feeling a little anxious about walking into a room full of business people, you’re not the only one. If you see someone standing alone, make an effort to approach them and strike up a conversation. A friendly smile can go a long way.

6. Leave a lasting impression
It may seem obvious, but the number of business people who arrive at a networking event with no business cards is astounding. Ensure you have a fresh stash in your handbag or pocket and hand these out to the people you engage with.

7. Mix it up
Don’t limit yourself to just one crowd. Attending a variety of networking events will allow you to mingle with a range of business professionals from varying industries.

8. Be prepared on all fronts
Building networks extends beyond the networking event venue. Ensure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date at all times in case contacts you’ve made wish to view your profile and learn more about your services and skills.

Vanessa Webster, a social media and networking expert and founder of WebStar Marketing, will outline further techniques for building business networks at KWCCI’s upcoming networking event, which will be held on Friday 24 April from 12.30pm.

The event is open to all business owners and operators and will take place at BV Pizzeria and Wine Bar at Kawana Island.
