Winners announced for Holmes Art Prize and Local Artists Local Content Art Prize
August 12, 2015
A $10,000 dollar cheque was awarded to Katherine Cooper’s work ‘Out to Lunch’ at last night’s much anticipated opening of the Holmes Art Prize, Australia’s first birdlife art prize as well as another pool of $6,000 awarded to Local Artists Local Content Art Prize winners Pam Walpole, Peta Boyce and Beatrice Prost.
Two hundred guests gathered at the Oaks Oasis Resort Golden Beach to view the field of 36 national bird artists exhibited alongside 40 of our most talented local artists in Local Artists Local Content, both a part of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize’s tenth anniversary celebrations.
‘Out to Lunch’ has been acquired into the private collection of Dr Gary Holmes and he could not be more thrilled with the outcome of the exhibition’s first year.
“There was an exceptionally high standard of works submitted for this national art prize, with many of the finalists being some of the world’s most acclaimed bird artists,” said Dr Holmes.
“It takes a talented eye to really capture the essence of these beautiful animals. The paintings in my collection have been selected based on the sensational colours, meticulous brushwork and realistic reflection of the subject matter and I am excited to be adding this piece to my walls.”
The Holmes Art Prize was fortunate to have Australia’s most awarded wildlife photographer, Raoul Slater, as its judge and Rex Backhaus-Smith was the judge for the Local Artists Local Content Prize.
Friends of the Gallery Caloundra President, Marie Pigott said the Holmes Art Prize and the Local Artists Local Content Art Prize are the first exhibitions to be opened as part of a suite of art awards and categories for the Sunshine Coast Art Prize with well over $100,000 in prize money being packaged as a larger celebration of arts and culture held on the Sunshine Coast.
“The Friends are incredibly proud to be able to host both this new award and support local artists through the Local Content Art Prize,” said Ms Pigott.
The Exhibition will be held at the Oaks Oasis Resort Golden Beach from 12th August – 30th August 2015.
Ends.
