Trampolinists compete in Nationals this weekend

July 31, 2012

While Aussie Olympian for trampoline, Blake Gaudry is striving for gold in London this weekend, over 370 of the country’s best trampolining competitors will bounce it out at Sleeman Sports Complex Arena in Brisbane in the National Clubs Trampoline Championships.

The event will see 35 clubs from across Australia go head to head for the national titles from August 3-5. Gymnasts will complete short routines on trampolines containing a variety of twists, bounces and somersaults and marks are awarded for difficulty, execution and flight time.

Kym Dowdell, Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer says the three-day event is always popular with spectators and is delighted that Queensland can play host to such a significant event.

“The trampolining discipline is one of the most impressive in our sport and crowds are always entertained by the complex routines which often include combinations of forward or backward somersaults and twists executed with great precision,” said Kym Dowdell, Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer.

“It’s the love of the trampoline that gets many young kids involved in gymnastics in the first place and to see what these young men and women can do is truly inspirational for those thinking of getting involved in the sport.”

While the trampoline is now a common addition to many back yards, it was originally designed as a training tool for astronauts and to help athletes practice acrobatic routines in sports such as diving and artistic gymnastics. As the popularity of the sport increased, it was admitted as an Olympic sport at the Sydney Games in 2000 for both men and women.

The event will be held at the Sleeman Sports Complex Arena in Chandler, Brisbane and tickets will be available at the door. For further details on this event, please visit www.gymqld.org.au or call 3036 5607.
