Surf champ to speak on Sunshine Coast
February 18, 2014
Seven-time surfing world title champion Layne Beachley will surf her way into the hearts of more than 200 local businesswomen next month, speaking at the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network breakfast event on 11 March at the Palmer Coolum Resort as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.
Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network President Michalle Faulkner said she was excited to welcome Ms Beachley to the Sunshine Coast to deliver her presentation focusing on “inspiring change”, this year’s theme for International Women’s Day celebrations across the globe.
“This breakfast is one of the most popular events on our annual calendar and Layne will not only bring her story of her incredible surfing achievements but also share the reason she’s so highly regarded for her tireless charity work and commitment to assisting Australian women to achieve their dreams,” Ms Faulkner said.
“We feel very privileged to have Layne coming to speak for us; she is a true inspiration and should be commended for her efforts in facilitating positive change in the world.”
Ms Beachley founded the Aim For The Stars Foundation in 2003, and since then, has gone on to provide more than $570,00 in grants to approximately 500 individual and group recipients to help them achieve their dreams across a range of disciplines.
She is widely regarded as the most successful female surfer of all time being the only surfer, male or female, to claim six consecutive world titles (1998-2003) then going on to win a seventh world title in 2006 before retiring from the ASP World Tour in 2008. She also took home the ISA World Masters Champion title in 2011 and 2013, was awarded the 3rd Greatest Female Athlete of All Time and has been inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and Surfing Australia Hall of Fame.
Ms Faulkner said event attendees would have the opportunity to win a meet-and-greet with the surfing legend as well as a surf board signed by Ms Beachley.
“Layne has generously donated a signed surf board for the event which incorporates a decal of her surfing designed by local company Ctrl V,” Ms Faulkner said.
“The proceeds from the day’s raffle will be shared with the Aim For The Stars Foundation, and there will also be plenty of other prizes up for grabs.”
“We’ll also have The X-Factor finalist Andrew Lawson performing an intimate set of popular tunes on the day. This event is not to be missed!”
International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on 8 March, has been observed since the early 1900s and sees thousands of events held across the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements.
The Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network breakfast event will take place at the Palmer Coolum Resort on Tuesday, 11 March, with attendees asked to arrive at 6.30am for a 7.00am start.
