Sunshine Coast gymnasts battle it out for the gold at State Championships
September 8, 2011
Over 70 of the Sunshine Coast’s top young gymnasts are preparing to battle it out at the annual Gymnastics Queensland State Championships which will be held at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium from September 16 – 19.
The four-day event, sponsored by Gymnastics Queensland, Sunshine Coast Destination and Sunshine Coast Council will showcase a number of high calibre gymnasts from the Cooroy Gymnastics Club, Maroochy Beach Gymnastics and Sunshine Coast Gymnastics Academy.
Kym Dowdell, Gymnastics Queensland Competitive Events Director says the event which also includes the Border Challenge and Sunshine Team Challenge will see 30 local and interstate clubs and over 750 competitors in action including an Indonesian men’s and women’s team participating in the champs as they prepare for the South East Asia Games coming up in November.
“Events such as these enable the young gymnasts from Cooroy, Maroochy Beach and the Sunshine Coast Gym Academy to not only compete for the coveted titles but also to learn from the best. We have some of Queensland and Australia’s most talented gymnasts and we are delighted to once again host the event on the beautiful Sunshine Coast,” said Kym.
This year’s event will see a record number of competitors between 8-25 years of age coming from Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, ACT and Indonesia.
“This event has always been a firm favourite for spectators and we encourage fans, or anyone interested in joining the sport to come along to support their local gymnasts and clubs as they demonstrate their remarkable skills,” said Kym.
The event is held at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium at Golden Beach and tickets are available at the door.
