Senior gymnasts to shine at state championships
April 11, 2016
Queensland gymnasts are preparing to compete in one of the most significant events on the state’s gymnastics calendar — the Gymnastics Queensland Senior State Championships and State Trial — which will take place in Brisbane between Thursday, 14 April and Sunday, 17 April.
The event will see more than 300 athletes vie for a place on the podium throughout the four-day event.
Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell said the event would incorporate both men’s and women’s disciplines of the sport, with acrobatic gymnasts also showcasing their skills.
“The state championships shine the spotlight on Queensland’s most elite gymnasts, with athletes from 40 clubs across the state set to deliver routines during the event.”
Ms Dowdell said based on the performances, a number of gymnasts would be selected to join Queensland’s ‘nationals’ team which will compete against gymnasts from around the country in Melbourne in May.
“Queensland has a number of rising gymnastics stars in its midst and these events provide athletes with the opportunity to practice performing in a competitive environment, which is particularly useful for those with their sights set firmly on the Olympic Games,” Ms Dowdell said.
“I look forward to seeing these talented athletes compete for the coveted titles and showcase their gymnastics prowess.”
The Gymnastics Queensland Senior State Championships and State Trial will take place at the Sleeman Sports Complex Arena in Chandler, Brisbane. Entry is open to members of the public and tickets are available at the door. For further details on this event, please visit www.gymqld.org.au.
