School scholarship applications now open

March 5, 2014

Scholarship applications are now open for students wishing to enrol in years 7 and 8 at Kawana Waters State College (KWSC) in 2015.

Kawana Waters State College Deputy Principal Elly Gerbo said with all students currently enrolled in Year 6 or Year 7 set to enter high school in 2015 as part of the Queensland Government’s Flying Start initiative, twice the number of scholarships available in previous years would be on offer next year.

“It’s an exciting year for Queensland schools with Year 7 becoming the first year of high school,” Ms Gerbo said.

“We’ve implemented a number of initiatives across our primary and secondary campuses to ensure the transition from primary to high school is seamless for incoming students and our scholarships are just another avenue for us to make sure student needs are met.”

Ms Gerbo said applicants continued to set the bar higher each year and she expected there to be some stiff competition amongst students applying for the scholarships.

“If previous years are anything to go by, I expect we’ll see applications from students who excel both in and outside the classroom.”

“It’s not just academic results that we consider; we also look at personal qualities, leadership skills, prowess on the sporting field or in areas like the arts and the applicant’s commitment to always trying their hardest.”

“There are so many exceptional local students that we find it incredibly difficult to narrow down the pool of applicants and select the lucky recipients.”

Ms Gerbo said the college was offering 16 scholarships — each valued at $400 — to reward outstanding young students who are good role models to their peers.

Applications are open to students currently enrolled in years 6 and 7, and are not limited to those studying at KWSC’s primary campus.

“Applicants from a range of primary schools are considered and in recent years, scholarships have been awarded to students from Currimundi State School and Talara Primary College just to name a few,” Ms Gerbo said.

Scholarship applications close at 4pm on Friday, 14 March 2014. For more information and to access an application form, contact Elly Gerbo or Kirsten Ferdinands on (07) 5493 3388 or email the.principal@kawanawaterssc.eq.edu.au.
