Scarecrow competition back due to popular demand

June 21, 2010

Last year’s inaugural scarecrow competition saw such an impressive display of entries from across the Coast, that organisers of the Queensland Home Garden Expo are once again calling for schools, community groups, families and individuals to enter creative designs in this year’s competition.

The competition, hosted in association with the Nambour Garden Club, will include three categories; the scariest scarecrow, the most glamorous scarecrow and the statement scarecrow, the latter being one with a social or environmental message.

Marion Beazley, Queensland Home Garden Expo organiser, is delighted to once again include the competition in the program of activities following last year’s success which saw over 40 scarecrows in the running for the cash prizes.

“We were very impressed with the entries last year and how creative people were in designing their scarecrow. I have no doubt that this year the judges will once again have a tough time selecting a winner,” said Marion.

“Building and dressing up a scarecrow really is a lot of fun and the whole family can get involved over the school holidays or groups can use the project as a fund raising opportunity.”

All group entries will receive two free tickets to the Expo and each individual entry will receive one free ticket to the event. In each category, the winner will receive $200 and each runner up will receive a $50 cash prize.

Entry forms can be downloaded from the website at www.homegardenexpo.com.au and must be submitted no later than Friday, July 2 with scarecrows being delivered to the Nambour Showgrounds on Wednesday July 7. Judging will take place on the Expo opening day, Friday, July 9.

The Queensland Home Garden Expo is held from 9-11 July and is a celebration of all things gardening attracting over 27,000 visitors last year who enjoyed displays from over 360 exhibitors, including 50 nurseries.
