Queenslanders clean up at national gymnastics championships

The state’s gymnasts are celebrating numerous victories at the 2015 Australian Gymnastics Championships held in Melbourne recently, with Queensland athletes Georgia Godwin and Naoya Tsukahara once again taking out the top gongs for women’s and men’s artistic gymnastics.
Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell said she was thrilled to see Queensland athletes achieving such strong results and commended the gymnasts on being awarded the Senior International Women’s and Men’s Individual All Around Titles.
“The championships saw the top gymnasts from across Australia battling it out for gold, and the outstanding results achieved by our gymnasts are a credit to the dedicated athletes and coaches who spend countless hours perfecting their routines,” Ms Dowdell said.
“Seventeen-year-old Georgia Godwin’s performance was particularly impressive, as she had only returned to full training four weeks prior to the event due to injury.”
“Georgia has quickly gained a reputation for her power moves including her double salto tumble passes on the floor, salto connections on the beam and double layout dismount off the uneven bars, so it’s no surprise that she has taken out the title for the second year running.”
Godwin trains at the Gymnastics Queensland High Performance Centre in Brisbane.
Ms Dowdell said three-time Olympian Naoya Tsukahara was also no stranger to back-to-back titles, having reclaimed the top position for the sixth year out of the past seven.
“Naoya has earned a strong reputation as one of Australia’s most seasoned and talented gymnasts and his prowess in the sport was once again on clear display in Melbourne,” Ms Dowdell said.
“Naoya led the Queensland gymnasts in wiping the floor on the rings, placing first in the competition followed by three other Queenslanders in second, third and fourth place.”
“Teammate Alex Caulfield was a close contender in the event, scoring just 0.075 below Naoya to take out the silver.”
“We’re incredibly proud of all the gymnasts who participated in the event and represented Queensland with such skill and good sportsmanship.”
