A 77-strong contingent of aerobic gymnasts will represent Queensland on the national stage this week, travelling to Bendigo in Victoria to participate in the 2017 Australian Aerobic Gymnastics Championships.

Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell said competing athletes had qualified to attend the meet through a series of aerobic gymnastics competitions held across Queensland throughout the year.

“Gymnasts have had their sights firmly set on making the national championships from day one of competition season, and we’re incredibly proud to have such a high number of competitors taking to the floor in Bendigo,” Ms Dowdell said.

“Some of the gymnastics clubs represented in the Queensland line-up include the Sunshine Coast’s Showtime Aerobic Gymnastics and MyDynamics & Fitkids Club Buderim; the Gold Coast’s Intensity Aerobics & Fitness; Brisbane’s Adrenaline Aerobics & Fitness, Premier Gymnastics Academy and Club Aerofit; and Cleveland-based Redland City GymSports.”

Ms Dowdell said gymnasts would perform complex, high intensity routines to music and had been putting the final touches on their performances in recent weeks.

“Competitors will represent Queensland in a range of categories and levels, with pairs, trios and groups showcasing their skills.”

“We’ll also have a number of individual performers taking to the stage. This requires a great deal of courage and confidence, so we commend these gymnasts for stepping up to compete.”

Ms Dowdell said that while there would undoubtedly be plenty of friendly rivalry between the states on display in Bendigo, the focus was on gymnasts having fun, doing their best and enhancing their skills.

“We’ve got a talented team of gymnasts heading to Bendigo, and win or lose, the meet will be a great opportunity to learn from other athletes and gain confidence in the competition environment.”

“I wish all competitors the best of luck and will be cheering on Queensland this week!”

The 2017 Australian Aerobic Gymnastics Championships will be held at the Ulumbarra Theatre in Bendigo between 20 and 24 September. To find out more about Gymnastics Queensland and its calendar of events, please visit www.gymqld.org.au.
