Queensland businessman dreams big

25 October 2013

Don McDonald doesn’t do things in halves.

In just 18 months, the business-savvy Queenslander has opened three Beds n Dreams outlets across the state and now has his sights set on the Sunshine Coast, with a fourth retail showroom scheduled to open its doors at the Maroochydore Homemaker Centre this week.

Mr McDonald said the new Sunshine Coast store would officially open on Saturday, 26 October, offering a broad range of mattresses, bedroom furniture, manchester and homewares.

“With the newly-opened Logan, Fortitude Valley and Aspley stores having proved very successful, I felt it was time to expand the franchise even further,” Mr McDonald said.

“I’ve spent a lot of time on the Sunshine Coast over the years, and having witnessed such strong population growth, I realised the region presented great conditions for launching a new outlet.”

“Consumer confidence in the area is also picking up, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to strike while the iron was hot.”

Mr McDonald said the Maroochydore Homemaker Centre had been the logical place to take up tenancy, with the centre poised for growth in the coming months and years.

“The Maroochydore Homemaker Centre has already attracted some really big names on the retail circuit and established itself as the Sunshine Coast’s only real one-stop shop for items around the home,” Mr McDonald said.

“While there is only one retail vacancy left in the centre, there are still a few commercial spaces available and I found this potential for further growth a really strong drawcard.”

“It also doesn’t hurt that it’s located in one of the most beautiful parts of the world; I’m really looking forward to staying on the Sunshine Coast more regularly and soaking up the lifestyle!”

The new Beds n Dreams outlet will open beside Domayne, and will kickstart its first month of trade by offering discounts of up to 50 per cent across the store.

Maroochydore Homemaker Centre Manager Jennifer Ellis said she was thrilled to welcome Beds n Dreams to the centre, bringing the total number of resident retailers to 18.

“Beds n Dreams has established a strong name for itself across Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales, and we’re delighted to have such a high profile brand joining our existing pool of retailers,” Ms Ellis said.

“The new store will also generate employment for at least five Sunshine Coast workers — including the recently-appointed Store Manager Greg Rabbidge— so the opening is also great news for the local economy and workforce.”
