Over 900 gymnasts converge in Caloundra

September 18, 2012

Gymnastics from across Australia will converge on the Sunshine Coast this Friday when the region plays host to a number of gymnastics events, including the MAG National Clubs Championship, the MAG & WAG Queensland State Club Championships and the WAG State Challenge from September 21-25.

The State and National events will see over 900 of the country’s most talented gymnasts representing 42 local and interstate clubs as they battle it out for the highly coveted gold medals at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium.

The four-day event is sponsored by Gymnastics Queensland, Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd and will showcase the best-of-the-best from each club and state aged between 6–25 years.

Kym Dowdell, Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer said the organisation was delighted to host such high calibre events including the MAG National Clubs which has attracted 14 interstate clubs.

“The Olympic Games always elevates the profile of gymnastics so we anticipate a high level of spectators at the event and they won’t be disappointed,” said Ms Dowdell.

“The events will see gymnasts compete on apparatus such as the vault, rings, parallel bars, horizontal bar, pommel horse, uneven bars and balance beam as well as completing floor routines to demonstrate a series of tumbles and other strength and flexibility displays.”
