After nearly 30 years in PR and communications, I’ve noticed the same pattern crop up repeatedly with professional services firms wanting to raise their profile. They pour time and budget into new websites, social media, B2B events, brochures, sponsorship, email newsletters and advertising.

All good things, and all worth doing.

However, there’s one investment that so often gets pushed down the priority list: PR on the inside.

By that I mean the work you do on your strategy, your culture, your team and your people before you spend a cent trying to be seen externally.

Because the strongest PR and marketing doesn’t just come from what you say about your business. It comes from having a business that people inside it understand, believe in and are proud to be part of.

I once worked with a firm that had spent a small fortune on a rebrand. New logo, new website, beautiful photography, the works. However, when I sat down with the team, the story underneath told a different tale. Staff felt disconnected from leadership. Nobody could quite explain what the firm stood for or where it was headed. The external polish looked fantastic, but it was sitting on some shaky foundations.

Now compare that to firms I’ve worked with where the inside is humming.

Staff know the strategy and feel genuinely proud of where they work. They talk about it at bbqs and dinner parties, they refer their friends, they share posts about the company to their personal social media pages, they stay longer, and they give clients a better experience because they’re not burnt out or checked out.

That kind of energy is contagious. It shows up in every client interaction, every phone call, every proposal that goes out the door.

And that’s the magic of building capacity on the inside. When your people understand the strategy, have the skills and support to deliver it, and feel connected to where the business is heading, your external PR and marketing has something real to amplify (not to mention, its much more likely to be a success!).

Your product is your people

For professional services firms, whether you’re in consultancy, IT, development, HR, law, accounting, financial services or engineering, this matters more than most.

Clients aren’t buying a widget. They’re buying trust, expertise and a relationship with the humans giving them advice. If those humans feel disengaged or unclear on where the business is going, no amount of clever marketing is going to paper over that.

That’s why strategy, people development and workplace culture need to be part of the conversation when you’re thinking about your PR and marketing.

It’s difficult to build a strong external reputation if the experience on the inside doesn’t match the story you’re telling on the outside.

So before you brief an agency on your next campaign, it’s worth pausing and having an honest look inward.

Do your staff understand and believe in your strategy? Would they recommend working there to a friend? Do they feel heard by leadership? Do they have the skills and support they need to deliver on the business’s ambitions? Is your internal communication getting the same care and attention as your external communication?

Get the inside right first

Build a culture people genuinely want to be part of, invest in your people and their development, make sure everyone understands where the business is going, and give your team the capacity to help get you there.

Once that’s humming along, your external PR and marketing will work so much harder for you, because you’ll be amplifying something real instead of papering over the cracks.

Happy team members talk (and unhappy team members can scream). They tell their networks, their families and their friends, and that word of mouth, powered by a genuinely happy team, is worth more than any advertising spend you can make.

And when your people are confident in the strategy, connected to the purpose and equipped to deliver it, they become one of your most powerful assets when it comes to building your reputation.
