Kawana students showcase success

November 26, 2012

Outstanding results are becoming the norm at Kawana Waters State College (KWSC) with the recent announcement of their exceptional National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) scores.

The NAPLAN results showed KWSC’s year nine students topped the ranks amongst all other Sunshine Coast state high schools.

Off the back of this exceptional outcome, KWSC hosted their 2012 Academic, Sports and Cultural Awards Ceremony for years six to 12 students recently at the Lake Kawana Community Centre.

Secondary Campus Principal Kirsten Ferdinands said they are very excited about the calibre of the students recognised at this year’s awards ceremony that has further cemented the success of the recent NAPLAN results.

“The relative gain data also showed our secondary campus outperformed all other schools on the Coast.”

The relative gain data reports a comparison of mean scale scores across Australia and Queensland with individual schools.

“We have achieved more than 10 per cent above the average in four of the five NAPLAN categories,” Mrs Ferdinands said.

“For grammar and punctuation we scored 58.2 per cent compared with the Australian average of 37.7 per cent and our reading results where 40.8 per cent over 28.5 per cent for the Australian average.

“These results are a true testament to the dedication and commitment of our teachers and of course, our very clever students.”

Alongside these larger scale achievements for the school the ceremony also showcased student’s individual talents and their achievements in areas of academia, sports and culture.

“We saw an outstanding performance from Jordan Gubecka who received the Year Seven Academic Excellence Award and Most Outstanding Academic Student Award for year seven,” Mrs Ferdinands said.

“Jordan was very pleased to be photographed with our local MP the Hon. Jarrod Bleijie after he received his award.”
