Hall setting high standards at Darwin Naval Base

February 17, 2014

Australian dredging, civil contracting and marine civil company Hall Contracting has once again set the bar in safety and environmental responsibility, having recently completed dredging maintenance works at the Darwin Naval Base without a single safety or environmental incident.

Hall Contracting Managing Director Cameron Hall said the three-month project — completed for Spotless on behalf of the Australian Department of Defence — involved dredging approximately 30,000m3 of sediment from the naval base.

“It was especially important that our staff were at the top of their game while working on this project as dredging was undertaken alongside the regular shipping operations taking place in the harbour,” Mr Hall said.

“The Navy vessel schedules were constantly changing so methodical planning was crucial to our success.”
Mr Hall said the company was no stranger to a perfect safety record, having completed numerous projects without any employees obtaining so much as a paper cut.

“It’s really encouraging to have obtained such great results in Darwin, particularly off the back of our success working on the Fortescue Metals T155 port expansion project in Port Hedland where we also achieved our goal of zero harm,” Mr Hall said.

“We’re continually striving to improve our safety procedures and we are proud to operate an internationally-accredited safety management system.”

Mr Hall said the company also implemented a world-class environmental management system, with the impacts of this apparent while working on the Darwin Naval Base project.

“We regularly sighted pods of dolphins in the harbour during the dredging operations,” Mr Hall said.

“It’s normal for them to rest in the harbour when fast-running spring tides are about, and our stringent environmental controls ensured their natural routines weren’t disturbed.”

Hall Contracting operates primarily across Australia, South-East Asia and the Pacific Islands.
