Gymnasts celebrate at annual awards night

More than 200 gymnasts, coaches, judges and club managers from across Queensland gathered at Tattersall’s Function Centre in Brisbane for the Gymnastics Queensland Annual Awards Dinner to celebrate excellence in the sport on Friday, 16 January.
The awards recognise those clubs that demonstrate best practice on a variety of levels and are achieving sustained member growth, as well as individuals that excelled in gymnastics performance, coaching and judging in the past 12 months.
Kym Dowdell, Gymnastics Queensland’s Chief Executive Officer said the awards provided an opportunity to identify those achieving exceptional results – both at an individual and a club level.
“This event enables us to recognise those achieving excellence in the sport which in turn sets the benchmark for others to follow and raises the bar across the State,” Ms Dowdell said.
The highest accolade of “Gymnastics Queensland Club of the Year” was awarded to Gold Coast Gymnastics Club for the second year in a row.
Highlights for the club in 2014 included exceeding 2,500 members, hosting events throughout 2014, having eleven state team members across Men’s Artistic Gymnastics and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, a five per cent increase in the number of members and also having representatives on the Sports Management Committee for Gymport and the Board sub-committees.
Other clubs recognised at the events evening included performance clubs for each discipline:
– Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) Performance Club: Gold Coast Gymnastics;
– Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) Performance Club: Delta Gymnastics Brisbane;
– Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG) Performance Club was Moreton Bay College Gymnastics;
– Trampoline (TRP) Performance Club: Robertson Gymnastics Club;
– Aerobatics (AERO) Performance Club: Moreton Bay College Gymnastics; and
– Acrobatics (ACRO) Performance Club: Robertson Gymnastics Academy.
The gymnastics night of nights also recognised outstanding performance in individuals with Jackson Clarke from Lawnton Artistic Gymnastics Academy being awarded 2014 Junior International MAG Gymnast of the Year, Georgia Godwin from Gold Coast Gymnastics Club named as 2014 Senior International WAG Gymnast of the Year and Jarrod Spear from Victoria Park Gymnastics and Trampoline Club is the 2014 Senior Athlete of the Year for Trampoline Sports.
Danielle Prince from Moreton Bay College Gymnastics was awarded RG Gymnast of the Year, Amy Behan of Club Aerofit was named the AERO Gymnast of the Year and Amy Lang, Lizzy Jacobs and Elodie Rousseau from Robertson Gymnastics Academy took home the ACRO Gymnasts of the Year award.
The Frank Vig Sportsmanship Awards were presented to Lauren Sampson from Robertson Gymnastics Club for Trampoline Sports and to Taylor Ryan from Delta Gymnastics Brisbane for Artistic Gymnastics (WAG & MAG).
