Gymnastics Queensland’s Annual Awards Dinner

Gymnastics Queensland celebrated the best in business at the Annual Awards Dinner – on Saturday night at the Pullman Brisbane – as the country gears up for a big year ahead in the sport with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

More than 200 representatives from gymnastics clubs across Queensland attended the gala event where individuals and clubs were recognised for their contribution to the sport.

Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell said it was a great way to start the year by celebrating the outstanding performances from clubs, athletes, coaches, judges and volunteers who make the sport what it is today.

“This is an exciting year for gymnastics with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and while we will celebrate the top athletes later in the year, it’s important to remember the hard work that goes into the grassroots level,” Ms Dowdell said.

“Our Annual Awards Dinner is a great evening to acknowledge the local clubs who model best practice and innovation as well as commitment and development that goes into the sport.

“Gymnastics Queensland proudly supported 52,649 athletes across the state who work extremely hard throughout the year competing to the best of their ability with the help of some amazing coaches and volunteers.”

The Club of the Year was awarded to Robertson Gymnastics in Brisbane which had a stellar year, with 1,827 athletes, excelling in its mentoring program, and staying highly competitive at state, national and international level.

The Trevor Dowdell Regional Service Award was awarded to Anna Turetschek from Gladstone Gymnastics who has been pivotal in growing the membership from 15 to 700 members over 30 years.

The award goes to an individual who has significantly contributed to the development of the sport over a lengthy period of time.“Anna has been instrumental in transforming the club over the past three decades, mentoring hundreds of young athletes,” Ms Dowdell said.

“Gymnastics Queensland would like to congratulate all the finalists and award winners for their achievement as they head into a thrilling 2020.”
