13th Noosa Long Weekend Festival (18-27 July 2014)
July 10, 2014
Excitement is building for the commencement of the 13th annual Noosa Long Weekend Festival held 18-27 July with a number of events already sold out and many more expected to be at capacity as dates get closer.
Festival Director Ian Mackellar said that the response to this year’s program has been wonderful but reminds people that if they have missed out on tickets, there are some great free events which allow everyone to be caught up in the Festival atmosphere.
“Open to the whole community, the Festival will start celebrations with a Carnevale parade down Hastings Street featuring Balkan dance music by Linsey Pollack and his band of ‘Unusual Suspects’,” Mr Mackellar said.
“Noosa is set to come alive with this exciting street entertainment of 22 musician and performers who will work their way along the length of Hastings Street from 5-6pm on Friday 18th July.”
“The parade will culminate with the lighting of Hastings Street Tree in red lighting, which will signify the start of the Festival and remain lit throughout the NLWF 2014 festival (18-27 July).”
Throughout the festival there are some great opportunities for families to join in the fun such as the Teddy Bears Picnic which is being held at Lions Park, Gympie Terrace at 10am – 12pm on Sunday20th July.
“Always a family favourite, the Teddy Bears Picnic will have story tellers, face painting, magicians, balloon animals, Cartoon Dave giving classes, a variety of art activities hosted by the Noosa Regional Gallery and sausage sizzles,” Mr Mackellar said.
“Thanks to our major sponsor of the Teddy Bears Picnic, Acres Noosa, a teddy bear and an ice-cream will also be available for a total cost of $5.00.”
The Twilight Orchestral Concert with the Queensland Youth Orchestra 2 (QYO2) is set to be a magical evening suitable for the whole family, set at Bicentennial Hall Saturday 26 July from 5pm, with tickets only $15 per person.
“With 90 members aged from 12 to 22 and delivering over 50 high quality public performances a year, this orchestra sees some of Queensland’s finest young musicians taking the stage in a very special night to remember,” Mr Mackellar said.
Visual arts have also been a very important component to the festival and this year there are three free exhibitions being held at the J Theatre Foyer and Noosa Gallery.
“Barry Alsop has been the official Noosa Long Weekend Festival photographer for eleven years and strolling through this exhibition it is evident to see how he has captured all the beauty, energy, drama and excitement of each festival event,” Mr Mackellar said.
“Leigh Gordon, an artist who resides on Hamilton Island and with work that reflects a vivacious expression of her environment, will also be exhibiting in the Foyer space from 19 -26 July inclusively.”
Noosa Gallery will also be presenting an exhibition by Judy Watson throughout NLWF 2014.
Urging people to step outside and discover Noosa and its surrounds, Heritage Walks has a wide range of walks led by historical and cultural experts on every day of the Festival. These walks are great for any age and are also a free event.
“There truly is something for everyone this year no matter what the budget and we look forward to sharing the Festival spirit right through the community in only a matter of days,” Mr Mackellar said.
