Does business networking make you nervous?

Networking: It has been known to cause many a nervous flutter and clammy palm within the business community, yet one local chamber is tackling the anxiety-inducing activity head-on at a business event on Friday, 20 May at Green Zebra Restaurant & Bar.
The event – hosted by Kawana Chamber of Commerce – will see networking professional Vanessa Webster of WebStar Marketing outline simple techniques for mastering the art of networking and fostering new business connections.
Kawana Chamber of Commerce President Linda Delamotte said developing and maintaining a network of quality contacts was a vital element for the success of most small businesses and she encouraged business owners looking to expand their operations to upskill in this area.
“Networking not only offers the chance to build relationships within your industry, but also provides a platform for business owners to raise the profile of their organisation and seek advice from other business-savvy individuals,” Ms Delamotte said.
“While many people tend to recognise the benefits of networking, interacting with others as part of a large group setting can sometimes be a daunting experience — particularly for those who are more introverted than others — so we felt it was important to equip our members with tips and tricks to network effectively and with confidence.”
Presenter Vanessa Webster said the educational event would teach attendees the fundamentals of networking over a relaxed sit-down lunch.
“At the end of the day, business networking is a low-cost marketing method that assists in developing sales opportunities and contacts, so it pays to do it well,” Ms Webster said.
“There are some very simple techniques people can use to improve their proficiency at networking. Essentially it’s important to keep the conversation flowing, ensure you ask questions as well as answer them and generally have an air of confidence when engaging with other business people. With a positive outlook you will attract the right people and find it easier to maintain good conversation.”
The Kawana Chamber of Commerce ‘Loong Lunch’ event will take place on Friday, 20 May at noon at the Green Zebra Restaurant & Bar, 5 Grand Parade, Parrearra. Tickets cost $38 for members and $45 for non-members and include a sit-down lunch and drink on arrival. To book a seat, please visit www.kawanachamber.com.au.
