SCBC Chair disappointed in Federal budget for lack of investment
Chair of the Sunshine Coast Business Council (SCBC) Sandy Zubrinich has expressed disappointment that the 2025–26 Federal Budget failed to commit critical infrastructure funding for the Sunshine Coast, despite the region’s rapid population growth, its role as a key partner region for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games and its escalating housing crisis.
Ms Zubrinich said the Federal Government’s decision to overlook vital projects such as the Mooloolah River Interchange, the Sunshine Coast Stadium expansion and the long-awaited rail extension from Caloundra through to Maroochydore was a significant setback for the region.
“It is beyond frustrating that the Sunshine Coast – one of the fastest-growing regions in the country – has been completely ignored in this budget when we urgently need infrastructure investment to support our booming population and prepare for the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Ms Zubrinich said.
“These projects are not just nice to have – they are essential to ensure our region remains connected and economically competitive. We have advocated for this investment over many years, as without it, we risk falling behind in delivering the essential infrastructure needed to support the millions of visitors, athletes and officials arriving in 2032, as well as the long-term growth and prosperity of our region.
“Adding to our concerns, is the failure to deliver targeted housing investment, despite the Sunshine Coast being one of the hardest-hit regions in Australia’s housing crisis. We are facing severe housing affordability and supply issues, yet this budget does not include any region-specific funding initiatives to support social and affordable housing projects on the Sunshine Coast.
“While national initiatives such as the expansion of the ‘Help to Buy’ scheme to support first home buyers, rent assistance increases and housing infrastructure investments are welcome, they fail to address the unique challenges of our region.
“The Sunshine Coast cannot afford to be ignored any longer. We are growing, we are contributing to the national economy, and we are preparing to showcase our region on the world stage in 2032.”
SCBC congratulates State on 2032 Delivery Plan
Ms Zubrinich yesterday attended the Queensland Government’s presentation of the 2032 Delivery Plan for the Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, announced following a 100-day review.
“Queensland Premier David Crisafulli’s presentation of the 2032 Delivery Plan signifies a pivotal moment in Queensland’s preparations for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games. The plan outlines substantial infrastructure developments aimed at enhancing the state’s capacity to host the Games and deliver lasting benefits to its communities,” Ms Zubrinich said.
“We are particularly pleased with the approval of Walker Corporation’s billion-dollar proposal for a new entertainment venue in the Maroochydore CBD. This exciting development includes an athlete village, indoor arena and cultural precinct — all integral to the successful hosting of the 2032 Games and the enjoyment of Sunshine Coast residence well beyond. Importantly, it brings private sector investment into delivering critical infrastructure especially considering the current state budget pressures.
“Additionally, the introduction of ‘The Wave’, a direct rail line from Beerwah to Birtinya with a metro hub connecting to Sunshine Coast Airport through Maroochydore CBD, aims to alleviate congestion and enhance commuter movement across the region.
“The underlying principle that legacy benefits from the Games would be real, delivered and shared throughout Queensland was well explained by the Premier, and well received by the audience.
“The Sunshine Coast has emerged as a significant beneficiary of the infrastructure funding – around $10b in 7 years – which will lead to long-term legacy benefits for our region. Notably, the extension of heavy rail from Brisbane to Beerwah, connecting through to Birtinya and linking with a state-of-the-art metro hub, will provide improved connectivity to the Sunshine Coast Airport and Maroochydore CBD – a major win for our region.
“Other wins for the region include the planned upgrades to the Sunshine Coast Stadium and funding for the Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Centre.”
