Voters need more information says Business Council

January 27, 2015

With the state election only days away, the Sunshine Coast Business Council (SCBC) has called on political parties to be more vocal on how the Coast and in particular the business community will benefit from their party being in government.

SCBC Chair Sandy Zubrinich said there was a need for alternative parties to provide detailed insight on what the Coast could expect post-election.

“Without a clear understanding on what alternative governments would offer the Sunshine Coast as a region, it’s difficult for voters to consider their options and make an informed decision,” Ms Zubrinich said.

“We are only a few days from going to the booths and yet we are still waiting to see convincing arguments on how the Coast business community stands to benefit according to who comes into power.”

“By now most of us have some understanding of the LNP’s four pillar economy strategy as well as the reforms to Workers’ Compensation, the lowering of payroll tax and the reduction of red tape — all of which help our regional businesses.”

“However, we need to see more help to business if we are to drive the jobs we need.”

Ms Zubrinich said SCBC was encouraged by the LNP’s commitment to the over $500 million duplication of the Landsborough rail link and surprised that this commitment hadn’t been matched by alternative parties.

“We also welcome the LNP’s commitment to the $440 million Mooloolah River interchange upgrade as well as the promises of improvement to local roads which will all drive jobs from 2015 onwards. However, we have not seen infrastructure commitments from alternative parties to this level.”

“Unemployment also continues to be an issue on the Coast, particularly for our youth and we’d like to see what strategies are in place to address this going forward. It’s crucial that we understand how the elected party will create jobs rather than just being assured that they will.”

“It’s time for agendas on key issues such as infrastructure, budgets and economic growth to be vocalised so Sunshine Coast voters have the ability to compare the various parties and the promises being made.”
