Leading compensation law firm Travis Schultz & Partners (TSP) have again demonstrated the calibre of legal talent in their ranks with their youngest Associate, Jemma Barnard, shortlisted for the highly coveted Lawyers Weekly 30 under 30 Awards for 2022.

The Awards aim to showcase the depth of talent in the nation’s up-and-coming lawyers, recognising their success, passion and dedication to the industry as Australia’s emerging generation of leaders in law.

Ms Barnard said making the finalist list alongside a cohort of exceptionally talented and passionate young lawyers, was a great honour.

“I feel incredibly honoured to be a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly 30 under 30, particularly during a time when the legal profession continues to evolve in a post-pandemic landscape,” Ms Barnard said.

“This recognition has energised me to do more, give back more and continue building my expertise within the legal profession,” Ms Barnard said.

TSP Managing Partner, Travis Schultz, said Jemma’s nomination proved again the quality of expertise coming out of the Sunshine Coast legal fraternity.

“To reach the finalist stage in this national award is an incredible achievement and is a reflection of what Jemma brings to the legal profession with her dedication and enthusiasm,” Mr Schultz said.

“The TSP team are very proud of everything Jemma has achieved in her career to date, and we are privileged to work side-by-side with her and watch her skills and craft sharpen with every case,” he said.

At just 26 years of age, Ms Barnard’s elevation to the position of associate in 2021 was fast-tracked and occurred only ten months after her admission.

Since then, Ms Barnard has gained tremendous experience through handling a diverse caseload across all three areas of compensation law including motor vehicle accident, workers’ compensation and public liability.

“Under the support and guidance of Travis Schultz and Tim McClymont, I have represented clients suffering both complex and catastrophic injuries and have provided advice concerning procedural, liability and cross-jurisdictional issues as well as representing clients in both nervous shock and dependency claims,” Ms Barnard said.

“I have also appeared in the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission and am currently instructing counsel on two workers’ compensation appeals in this jurisdiction,” she said.

A stand-out moment for Ms Barnard in the past year was participating in a complex five-day trial before the Supreme Court in Brisbane.

“I was presented with an opportunity to take the lead on various issues in the months leading up to trial including preparation of trial plans, pleadings and conferencing with both senior and junior counsel, our client, expert witnesses and the solicitors acting for the other party,” Ms Barnard said.

“Representing people who are experiencing great hardship and challenges in their lives is an honour and a privilege. I am truly grateful for the experience I have gained and for being able to work alongside an incredibly talented and professional team at TSP,” she said.

Ms Barnard has previously been listed in the Sunshine Coast Daily’s “30 under 30 most influential community members” as well as in the “Top 12 young Sunshine Coast Lawyers List”.

Celebrating its 10 year anniversary, the Lawyers Weekly 30 Under 30 Awards finalist list features 270 high-achieving professionals within the legal industry, across 31 submission-based categories. The Awards will be held on 3 June 2022 in Sydney.
