Top trampolinists jump into National Clubs event
While the humble trampoline may be considered just a standard piece of play equipment in many Australian backyards, it’s the key to success for the 350-plus competitors who will battle it out at the 2013 Trampoline National Club Championships at Sleeman Sports Complex Arena in Brisbane between 2 and 4 August.
Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell said 31 clubs from across Australia would compete at the event, with gymnasts set to complete a number of short routines incorporating twists, bounces and somersaults.
“We’ve got gymnasts travelling to compete from cities and towns as widespread as Subiaco, Adelaide and Launceston,” Ms Dowdell said.
“The competitors in this event take trampolining to a whole new level and are awarded marks based on degrees of difficulty, execution and flight time; the calibre of gymnasts is outstanding.”
Ms Dowdell said many of the competitors had originally signed up for gymnastics based on their love of jumping around on their home trampoline.
“Some of the stunts they carry out are mind-blowing and it’s great to see they still get so much enjoyment out of what was once just a childhood hobby.”
Ms Dowdell said she was excited to see the national championships being hosted in Queensland and expected the event would provide a thrilling three days of entertainment for spectators.
“Trampolining is arguably one of the most impressive and entertaining fields of gymnastics and we find crowds are generally in awe of the complex routines and the strength and precision it takes to deliver these successfully,” Ms Dowdell said.
“It’s quite incredible to think the trampoline was originally designed as a training tool for astronauts and then used by divers and artistic gymnasts to practice acrobatic routines on, yet it has now grown into a sport in its own right.”
