Queensland gymnasts leap into state championships

August 10, 2016

The competition will be fast and fierce at the Carrara Indoor Stadium this weekend, with gymnasts from across Queensland and beyond gearing up to participate in the 2016 Rhythmic Gymnastics and Sport Aerobics State Championships being held between 12 and 14 August.

More than 400 athletes from 18 clubs will compete in the three-day event, each vying for the title of Queensland State Champion.

Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell said while in past years, the championships for each discipline of the sport had been held on different weekends, in 2016, spectators would be treated to two events in one.

“The upcoming championships will make for a highly entertaining and visually spectacular gymnastics meet,” Ms Dowdell said.

“While the aerobic aspect of the competition will combine elements of traditional aerobics, sports acrobatics and rhythmic gymnastics with music, dance and choreography, we’ll also see the state’s most talented rhythmic gymnasts executing leaps and pirouettes and handling apparatus such as balls, hoops, clubs, ropes and ribbons.”

“A lot of planning, skill and precision goes into each of the high-energy performances, so I have no doubt spectators will be blown away when they see the routines.”

“This year, Queensland gymnasts will not only go head-to-head against each other; they’ll also take on some of their Victorian and New South Wales counterparts, with Ruyton Rhythmic Gymnastics Club and North Coast Gymnastics joining in on the action.”

Ms Dowdell encouraged sports enthusiasts and anyone interested in taking up gymnastics to come along to the event.

The 2016 Rhythmic Gymnastics and Sport Aerobics State Championships will be held at the Carrara Indoor Stadium with tickets will be available at the door.
