Port Douglas dredging project wraps up
June 24, 2014
A few weeks of wet weather and the region’s resident crocodiles weren’t enough to put a stop to recent dredging works in Port Douglas’ main boating inlet, with Queensland-based dredging and civil construction company Hall Contracting having just completed a maintenance dredging project in the area on behalf of the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Hall Contracting Managing Director Cameron Hall said more than 5km of dredge pipeline had been installed as part of the project since its commencement in January, and fine sand had been dredged from the waterway to allow local tourism operators to continue using the channel to transport tourists to the Great Barrier Reef.
“Tourism forms such a significant part of the Port Douglas economy, so these dredging works are essential for maintaining the condition of the access channel and keeping the livelihoods of local tourist operators safe,” Mr Hall said.
Mr Hall said the works were undertaken in an ecologically sensitive area and as such, care was taken to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment.
“We take environmental considerations very seriously and after completing these works for the first time in 2010, Hall Contracting was awarded a state Case Earth Award by the Civil Contractors Federation for environmental excellence.”
“Our commitment to environmentally responsible contracting really is at the forefront of everything we do and we’re proud to operate an independently accredited, world-class Environmental Management System.”
Mr Hall said the native fauna had undoubtedly kept the Hall Contracting crew on their toes throughout the project period, with one particularly curious resident crocodile frequently visiting the area to keep an eye on the action.
A total of seven team members worked on-site, including a number of local workers who were specifically hired for the project.
“As a Queensland-based company, our roots will always be firmly tied to the sunshine state, so we like to hire local workers wherever possible,” Mr Hall said.
“We have now also commenced work on deepening the Port Douglas marina, further cementing our presence in the area and creating more jobs for local workers.”
Established in 1946, Hall Contracting has grown to become one of Australia’s largest dredging and civil construction contractors. The company services both Australian and international markets and possesses an advanced fleet of dredges and ancillary equipment.
