Local business celebrates global eco event
13 April 2012
Eco Child is hosting a celebratory morning tea on Thursday 19 April as part of ‘Real Nappy Week’ despite recently losing everything in the floods that swept through their Brisbane Road store in Mooloolaba. Even though the whole store needed to move four doors up, nothing was going to stop the baby store’s owner Carly Earl from re-opening in time for this worldwide event held 16-22 April 2012.
Established by the Women’s Environmental Network in the United Kingdom and run alongside the ‘Real Diaper Week’ in the United States, the ‘Real Nappy Week’ has been running since 1989 and raises global awareness for the use of cloth nappies and their consequent impact on our environment.
In Australia alone, it is estimated that 800,000 disposable nappies are sent to landfill every year. On average each baby will contribute over 300 nappies every month to this number which ends up being costly and creating a significant carbon footprint.
“Cloth nappies are very different nowadays. We love surprising parents-to-be with how easy converting to cloth can be. Our ‘Dads-to-be’ are often so enthusiastic about the monetary savings they offer to do the laundry!” says Carly Earl.
“Customers often say their main reason to not use cloth is that they don’t want to touch baby poo. We love to tell them that it’s the baby that poos not the nappy! Once people see how easy they are to use and wash they are converted. They are so simple to use even day-care centres will happily change them. Soft and chemical free, no nappy rash, gorgeous prints and better for the environment – everybody wins!”
“Plenty of myth-busting demonstrations and Goodie bags (each worth more than $150) will be on offer for our morning tea including free advice from Jessica Mudri our resident Modern Cloth Nappy Blog Expert and Megan Atkins our lactation consultant & Paediatric Nurse who will both be in attendance.”
“It has definitely been a hard couple of weeks. We had been in that premise for just over 5 years. We had boxes of our cloth nappies floating across our shop floor when the floods came through. Thank goodness they were cloth. We have been able to wash them up and will have them available for extremely discounted prices on the day.”
The ‘Real Nappy Week’ Eco Child Morning Tea is being held at the new Eco Child store at 177 Brisbane Road boasting double the amount of space. This is a free event and anyone is welcome to attend. More details can be found on www.ecochild.com.au or by contacting Carly Earl 0421 866 604
