Kawana students wrapped with gift giving

December 14, 2012

More than 100 African and Cambodian children will benefit from the giving spirit this Christmas, with students from Kawana Waters State College (KWSC) having donated a variety of toys, clothes and school supplies to impoverished overseas communities as part of the ‘Operation Christmas Child’ initiative.

Kawana Waters State College Principal Paul Williamson said the initiative was part of the school’s Community Service and International Mindedness Program, which had been developed earlier this year to teach students about the importance of giving back to the community and accepting people from all walks of life.

“One of our key college values is respect and we’re committed to educating students about the importance of respecting ourselves, others, and our environment,” Mr Williamson said.

“The Community Service and International Mindedness Program will see students from Prep to Year 12 take part in a number of community projects and events over the coming months including a community garden project, Harmony Day, Bloomhill Cancer Walk and Relay for Life.”

Mr Williamson said as the first community project in the new calendar, the ‘Operation Christmas Child’ initiative had received an overwhelmingly positive response, with students even going so far as to decorate the shoeboxes goods would be delivered overseas in.

“Our students have really embraced the idea and wanted to deliver a special present that Cambodian and African children would treasure for a long time to come,” Mr Williamson said.

“We encouraged students to add something to love, something to wear, something for school, something special, something to play with and something for personal hygiene into their shoebox to provide them with an understanding of how important these things are and how lucky we are to have access to them on a daily basis.”
“I’m proud to say the students compiled more than 100 shoe boxes full of goods and have undoubtedly learnt a lot from the experience.”

Mr Williamson said the school had purposefully opted to include a number of international projects in their community service calendar, as the college possesses strong links with the international community.

“As the only P-12 school in Queensland to achieve ‘Accredited Status’ from the Council of International Schools, we are delighted to welcome students from across the world, who are guaranteed a high quality education that is international best practice.”

“At KWSC, we are an international community of learners so it makes sense to not only give back to our local community, but also those beyond Australian borders.”
