Kawana College cream of the crop

Following a recent visit from Education Queensland Director-General Dr Jim Watterson, Bokarina-based school Kawana Waters State College (KWSC) is celebrating being recognised by Education Queensland as the top performing secondary state school in the region.
Dr Watterson visited the college as part of the Regional Principal’s Forum, and commended KWSC for the outstanding results achieved by its 2013 senior school-leavers.
KWSC Principal Paul Williamson said the school’s success could be attributed to the commitment and diligence displayed by both teachers and students, and he was thrilled to see their hard work paying off.
“It’s an absolute honour to be identified as the best-performing secondary school in our region, which extends from Bray Park right through to Bundaberg,” Mr Williamson said.
“We’re incredibly proud to say 100 per cent of our Year 12 students in 2013 that applied for tertiary study received enrolment offers, and 82 per cent of students received an OP 1-15.”
Mr Williamson said 99 per cent of the college’s Year 12 students were awarded a QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education), recognising they had successfully completed Year 12 and achieved the necessary literacy and numeracy requirements, and the same number had also graduated with a Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification, providing them with a head start in their chosen career path.
“At KWSC, we place a strong focus on preparing students for entering the workforce, so we offer a range of formal qualifications across various industries, have access to a specialist trade centre for students who wish to study a trade and have developed partnerships with the University of the Sunshine Coast that are highly beneficial for students looking to pursue tertiary study.”
“We cater to all abilities and interests, and I think this is what really keeps our students engaged and performing so well; they can pick a pathway that suits their strengths and interests and most finish school with an added qualification that sets them ahead of the pack.”
With the Kawana health precinct set to create thousands of employment opportunities over the coming years, the college has recently extended its senior program offering to include formal qualifications in allied health, health administration and nursing.
“We’ve developed strong relationships within the new hospital and the Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE, and trust that by offering our students a range of health-oriented qualifications, we are providing them with the best chance of obtaining local employment should they wish to stay in the area after completing high school.”
Mr Williamson said the college also placed a strong emphasis on helping students to excel in younger years, with these strong foundations contributing to success in the senior school.
“We are currently rolling out a range of first-rate literacy and numeracy programs across our primary campus, and are experiencing huge growth in our Academic Curriculum Extension (ACE) Program, which caters to the needs of gifted and highly able Junior Secondary students,” Mr Williamson said.
“It’s really satisfying to be achieving such high level results, and we look forward to building on these even further in the years to come.”
