Gymnasts set their sights on London Olympics 2012

October 20, 2011

After only just touching down from participating in 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo, Queensland gymnasts are about to ramp up their training in preparation for the 2012 London test event and Olympics.

Larrissa Miller of Gymnastics Moranbah was the Queensland representative in the Australian women’s team which succeeded in securing a place in the Olympics for 2012, after taking eighth position at the World Champs.

Thomas Pichler of Gold Coast Gymnastics Club was placed 38th overall in the Men’s All Around competition scoring top floor exercise and parallel bars out of the Australians.

Over 532 competitors from 80 different countries battled it out qualify for a place at the Olympics in 2012 and Gymnastics Queensland Events Director, Kym Dowdell, said that our state representatives performed well and she is proud of their performance on the world stage.

“This was an important event leading up to the Olympics and it is always satisfying to see our team compete so well with the standard being set so high,” said Kym.

Although the Australian men’s team did not automatically qualify, there is still an opportunity for two Queensland representatives to compete in the test event in London in January 2012, which could see them through to Olympics in May as the Oceania representative.

“Our congratulations go to the Australian women’s team and good luck to the men who are still in with a chance to represent the state and the country.  We would also like to take the opportunity to thank all our gymnasts who participated in this year’s event,” said Kym.
