Sunshine Coast kids will be getting their hands dirty while participating in a myriad of free school holiday activities on offer at the Queensland Garden Expo between 7 and 9 July, with event organisers aiming to foster the next generation of green thumbs.
Event Manager Marion Beazley said the dedicated Kids Garden Patch was designed to keep kids entertained at the three-day event, while also instilling a love of gardening.
“We know kids love to dig in the dirt and get involved and the dedicated children’s area allows them to dig for vegetables and plant seeds, which we hope will continue once they get home,” Mrs Beazley said.
“Activities like these are great for getting kids out of the house and provide a good alternative for keeping them entertained without time in front of the TV or on the iPad. We all know kids need activity to grow healthy bodies and minds and gardening provides this as well as plenty of fresh air and the chance to learn about nature.”
“The Kids Garden Patch will also include a sand pit and craft area, allowing children to get hands on and even put their creativity on display.”
Ms Beazley said the ever-popular Old McDonald’s Farm exhibit would return once again in 2017, with kids and adults alike able to get up close with a variety of furry and feathered farm friends.
“Visitors can bottle feed, hand feed, pat and brush the farm animals, with everything from goats and piglets, right through to ducks and chickens on display.”
“This is an incredibly fun family activity and it inspires a love for animals while teaching children how to handle them.”
Ms Beazley said the event would cater to thrill-seeking youngsters, offering a giant slide in the free on-site playground.
“There will also be a jumping castle and merry-go-round located on the grassed area near the grandstand.”
“If past years are anything to go by, we’re confident parents will enjoy their visit just as much as the children as they have plenty of time to relax while the kids are entertained.”
The 2017 Queensland Garden Expo will feature more than 120 presentations and demonstrations across eight stages, with 55 nurseries expected to sell over 40,000 plants a day. It will be held on 7-9 July at Nambour Showgrounds, Coronation Avenue, Nambour.
Children under 15 enter free with a paying adult.
