Glossies Awards celebrate local champions
Sunshine Coast Council and over 150 guests celebrated the region’s sustainability champions last night with the presentation of the Living Smart Glossies Awards at an evening with special guest speaker Dr Karl Kruszelnicki at the TAFE Sustainability Interpretive Centre.
Eight categories were awarded, including the presentation of Golden Glossy Awards to the Walker Eco-Access House for the residential construction category and dual winners being named in the professional category – Wagtail Homes for Spoonbill House and WD Architects for the Noosa Pengari Performance Hall.
Winners of the other categories were:
– TAFE Resource Saver Award – Wagtail Homes
– Enviro Business Award – Kayak Noosa
– Greening the Arts Award – The Kabi Canoes Project
– Edible Landscape Award – Chevallum State School
– TAFE Living Smart Solutions Award – Auzion Solar Power
– Sunshine Coast Council Sustainable Transport Award – University of the Sunshine Coast Travel2USC
Cr Keryn Jones said the impressive calibre of submissions this year reflected the Coast’s commitment to achieving councils’ vision of being the most sustainable region in Australia.
“This vision can only be achieved if we all stand together and change the way we live and work – residents, businesses and organisations demonstrated their passion for achieving sustainable outcomes last night and it was great to be a part of,” said Cr Jones.
“We can be very proud of the winners as well as the finalists and nominees who are all working towards a more sustainable Sunshine Coast.
“The combination of these inspiring champions and the uplifting presentation by Dr Karl about the future of renewable energy and sustainability in general reflected the high profile of these awards.”
This was the inaugural year for the University of the Sunshine Coast Hall of Fame Award, which recognises outstanding contributions or innovations towards delivering on council’s vision.
The award was presented to Elaine Green recognising her and her late partner, Mark Ricketts as long term advocates and activists for sustainable development and environmental conservation on the Sunshine Coast.
Guests who attended from across the Coast enjoyed live music, networking and a fascinating presentation by Dr Karl of ABC radio and television fame as he shared his thoughts on how science can help us build a more sustainable future.
