As the Commonwealth Games draw to a close later this month, more than 200 female gymnasts from across South East Queensland will showcase their strength, agility and skill as part of the 2018 South East Queensland Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) Senior Regional Championships being held at the Sleeman Sports Complex on 14 and 15 April.

The meet follows the success of the Men’s Senior Regional Championships held last month, which saw in excess of 100 male athletes take to the vault, horizontal bar, parallel bars, rings and pommel horse.

Gymnastics Queensland Chief Executive Officer Kym Dowdell said female athletes from 26 clubs would compete this month in the hope of qualifying for the state championships being held on 19-22 April.

“Gymnasts will take to the floor as well as perform complex routines on apparatus such as the vault, uneven bars and beam,” Ms Dowdell said.

“Competitors have been honing their routines over the last few weeks, so I’m looking forward to seeing the talent on display.”

“In addition to competing for a place on the podium, gymnasts will have the opportunity to learn from their peers and familiarise themselves with the competition environment.”

Ms Dowdell said the event was open to the public, with anyone looking for an enjoyable weekend activity in Brisbane welcome to come along.

“If you’ve missed out on the opportunity to spectate at the Commonwealth Games, this event provides the perfect opportunity to see some of Queensland’s — and indeed, Australia’s — most talented athletes in action.”

“The senior regional championships offer entertainment for the whole family.”
