From little things, big things grow!

May 14, 2013

Gardens across Queensland are set to flourish with a little help from much-loved gardening guru, Colin ‘Col’ Campbell and the contents of his shed.

Items, including a Pope garden spade with Colin’s name engraved on it as well as a pair of his boots, will be auctioned off at the Queensland Garden Expo in July, with proceeds going towards various gardening projects.

Colin was best known for presenting the ABC’s Gardening Australia program, 4BC Gardening talkback program, his regular contribution to the Courier Mail as well as his annual contribution to the Queensland Garden Expo since its inception in 1984. He passed away last year after a battle with cancer and the auction will go some way to preserving his memory.

Queensland Garden Expo Event Manager Marion Beazley said it was extremely generous of Colin’s wife, Bev Campbell to donate some of his most prized possessions.

“The proceeds of the auction will be used to further Colin’s great contribution to the hobby of gardening,” Marion said.

“It will become a living and lasting memory of Colin’s passion and commitment to gardening.”

Mr Campbell was an integral part of the Expo every year and Marion said his posthumous contribution would attract thousands of friends and fans to the event which will take place between 5-7 July.

“We are expecting over 30, 000 visitors to the Expo and many of those will have come across Colin in years past. He was always one of our most popular keynote speakers, assisted with the plant clinic and made himself generally available as a valuable source of information about all things gardening during the event,” Marion said.

“We are currently calling for Expressions of Interest for the funds we raise. While the number of projects funded will depend on the amount of money raised at the auction, up to $3,000 per project will be available and the types of projects that could be considered are as wide as Colin’s interests in gardening.”

“Submissions could include plans to set up or expand a community or school garden, purchasing tools, books or equipment, the production of a brochure or website or to help someone further their studies in horticulture.”

The auction will be held on Saturday 6 July with Expressions of Interest for the funds closing on 30 June.

If you have a project that you would like to be considered, please go to the website www.qldgardenexpo.com.au to complete an Expression of Interest Form and return to info@qldgardenexpo.com.au or post to Queensland Garden Expo, PO Box 239, Nambour, Qld, 4560.

Ends.
