First birthday festivities all wrapped up

November 20, 2013

Today’s handover of more than 100 birthday gifts and monetary donations to local charity SunnyKids as part of the Maroochydore Homemaker Centre’s First Birthday Gift Drive has been icing on the cake for the local shopping outlet, which has just celebrated one year of trading.

Maroochydore Homemaker Centre Marketing Manager Kelli Robertson said centre retailers and Sunshine Coast community members had joined forces over the past four weeks to donate to the cause, with all donations going to local families in need.

“Local residents have been so supportive of the centre since it opened its doors 12 months ago, and we felt one of the best ways to celebrate our first birthday would be to give back to the community through this gift drive,” Ms Robertson said.

“We have compiled a wide range of items that can be put to good use by disadvantaged local families — there’s everything from kitchenware, bedding and furniture, right through to toys and children’s basics.”

SunnyKids CEO Chris Turner said he was thrilled to accept the donations on behalf of SunnyKids and to be involved with the centre’s birthday celebrations.

“The Sunshine Coast has always had such a great sense of community spirit and it’s really humbling to see that generosity coming out once again amongst local residents and businesses,” Mr Turner said.

“These donations will go a long way in assisting local families that are facing issues like homelessness, unemployment, mental health concerns and bereavement.”

The centre’s first birthday celebrations culminated over the weekend with an official first birthday party incorporating pass the parcel, balloon races and tunnel ball.

Ms Robertson said Sunshine Coast residents battled it out for their share of $10,000 in party prizes.

“The celebrations were certainly much larger than your average first birthday party and managed to generate plenty of laughs,” Ms Robertson said.

“The balloon races in particular brought on the giggles from the crowd of spectators; after all, it’s not every day you see adults and kids alike hopping 15 metres with a balloon between their knees!”
