Expo to focus on sustainable living
June 29, 2010
This year’s Queensland Home Garden Expo from July 9-11 promises to offer visitors a plethora of information on sustainable living, from growing your own fruit and vegetables to having chickens in your back yard.
The event will also feature the biggest ever Organic Giant Kitchen Garden incorporating a totally organic food court and a fully planted sustainable garden.
Exhibitors expected to prove popular include City Chicks, a backyard chicken supplier which has placed over 5,000 chickens into families’ homes in the past three years and Fungi, who provide a range of kits to grow your own fresh mushrooms at home including button, oyster and Shitake mushrooms.
Event manager, Marion Beazley believes the increased interest in being more sustainable and growing your own produce is due to organics becoming more popular and people realising how cost effective it can be to grow your own.
“As financial pressures increase, people are looking for ways to save money and growing your own fruit and vegetables can not only help stretch the weekly budget but can also be a lot of fun for the whole family,” said Marion.
“At the Expo we have a number of speakers to help those who want to grow their own produce, whether it’s their first attempt or they are seasoned gardeners looking for answers to specific questions.”
“With seven live stages featuring the likes of Colin Campbell, Annette McFarlane, Ross McKinnon, Paul Plant and Phil Dudman we believe we have gathered the most impressive collection of South East Queensland gardening experts ever.”
Annette McFarlane is one of the Expo’s most popular speakers and has authored a number of books, hosts Gardening Talkback on ABC 612 and contributes to the Sunday Mail and Organic Gardener Magazine.
“Whether you garden on a patio or half a hectare, everyone has room for a few vegetables and herbs and I will be sharing some of the fundamentals of organic gardening and remedies to solve common gardening problems,” said Annette.
“The Home Garden Expo offers both experienced green fingers and gardening amateurs the opportunity to learn more in a relaxed and fun environment and I am really looking forward to this year’s event.”
