Dr Karl locked in for Glossies Awards night

Organisers of the 2011 Living Smart Glossies Awards today called for submissions for the prestigious sustainability accolades which promise to culminate in a night-of-nights with Dr Karl Kruszelnicki on June 17.
The awards recognise and celebrate the sustainability achievements of Sunshine Coast residents, businesses and community groups in building design, construction, edible landscaping, transport, resource management and the new category, greening the arts.
Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said she was delighted that the high profile awards had attracted such a relevant speaker in Dr Karl who will share his views on the importance of sustainability practices, the interconnectedness of the climate to human achievements and cover a number of interesting scientific developments which will no doubt enthral his audience.
“With council’s commitment to becoming Australia’s most sustainable region these awards are one of the most important on our annual calendar as they recognise those in our community who are striving to build a more sustainable Sunshine Coast and provide inspiration for those looking to minimise their impact on our environment,” said Cr Jones said.
“The people of the Sunshine Coast tell me on a daily basis that they want a region that respects and protects its environment which means we need better solutions and sustainable innovation across all sectors. Even small changes in the way businesses operate or our daily lifestyle can have a big impact.”
This year’s awards will include a Hall of Fame Award for the first time to recognise outstanding ongoing contributions or innovations in sustainability as well as award categories including the Golden Glossy – Excellence in Sustainable Design Award, Resource Saver Award, Edible Landscape Award, Sustainable Transport Award, Living Smart Solutions Award, Enviro-Business Award and Greening the Arts Award.
The awards have always been well represented and attended by businesses and residents alike and organisers anticipate that having secured Dr Karl of radio and TV fame as keynote speaker will see this year’s event as the biggest yet.
Dr Karl is sure to entertain guests as he raises some thought-provoking and hot issues in sharing his thoughts on renewables, sustainable innovation and how science can help build a more sustainable future.
“The facts are in. If Australia switches to renewables to make its electricity, that power will cost one third of the price of getting it from coal. We could have it up and running within 10 years of starting,” Dr Karl Kruszelnicki.
