Dispelling the myths surrounding native plants

June 28, 2012

This year over 30,000 visitors are once again expected to flock to the Queensland Garden Expo at the Nambour Showgrounds from 6-8 July. For many the annual pilgrimage is about learning from the over 20 gardening experts who share their wealth of knowledge in lectures, workshops and demonstrations on the eight live stages at the event and successfully growing native plants is always a hot topic.

This year, Nick Hansa of the highly regarded Fairhill Native Plant Nursery at Yandina, is expected to prove popular with his ‘Ten Commandments for a Successful and Sustainable Native Garden’. Many would love to have a greater focus on native plants in their gardens so Nick will dispel the top ten myths when it comes to native plants to help people achieve greater success.

So if you believe any of the following are true, come along to hear Nick’s myth-busting presentation:

Myth No. 1 Native plants don’t need water.
Myth No. 2 Don’t fertilise native plants.
Myth No. 3 You can’t prune native plants.
Myth No. 4 Native plants are unreliable.
Myth No. 5 Native plants are short lived.
Myth No. 6 Native gardens are dull.
Myth No. 7 Native plants are messy.
Myth No. 8 Native gardens harbour insects that attack my exotic plants.
Myth No. 9 Native plants always grow too big.
Myth No. 10 Native gardens always look scruffy.

Come along to find out Nick’s ‘Ten Commandments for a Successful and Sustainable Native Garden’ to address these myths at 2pm on Friday, Saturday or Sunday at the Oval Speakers Corner or visit the Fairhill Native Plant Nursery stand.
