Coast women unite to celebrate 100 years of women’s achievements

2011 is the centenary of International Women’s Day which has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Each year thousands of events are held throughout the world during March to inspire women and honour their successes and on Tuesday, March 15 over 300 women will meet to celebrate with breakfast at the Hyatt Regency Coolum.
The Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network will host guest speaker Frances Whiting who is undoubtedly one of Queensland’s favourite female columnists with her weekly column in The Sunday Mail. For more than eight years, Frances has been entertaining readers with her Sunday “must read” stories (now syndicated to NSW and South Australia) making even more readers smile, cry and on occasion, fall out of bed laughing.
Frances’ first book “Oh to Be a Marching Girl” is a collection of some of her best and most loved columns and became a runaway success. Debuting at number one on the Australian bestseller list, the book is now in its third reprint and a firm favourite at book clubs across Australia and internationally. Frances is also actively involved in charity work and regularly gives her time to organisations including Kids Helpline, helping spread the message about the services they provide.
Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network President, Sue Willis says that Frances is a wonderful writer and presenter and looks forward to welcoming her as part of our International Women’s Day celebrations, which recognises the trials and triumphs of women world-wide.
“Frances’ fun approach to life shows through in her weekly column, so it’s no surprise that hundreds and thousands of readers from Brisbane to Bondi to Adelaide look forward to enjoying her stories each Sunday. She is an impressive speaker and I’m sure each woman attending the breakfast will leave feeling inspired and with a smile on their faces following her performance,” said Sue.
“Year after year International Women’s Day increases in status, recognising just how far women have come in the last century. One of the key things we need to take away is not just to commemorate it for one day but consider how we can truly make a difference – thinking globally and acting locally and making every day a celebration of women.”
International Women’s Day, officially celebrated on March 8 every year, has come a long way from being a reminder about the adversity that women faced to the celebration of their achievements.
