Burdekin PCYC gymnastics program gets stamp of approval

May 8, 2014

The team at Burdekin PCYC is celebrating its recent accreditation by Gymnastics Queensland as part of the national Launchpad program – an initiative aimed at increasing participation in sport amongst Aussie kids and equipping them with the fundamental movement skills required in all types of physical activity.

Burdekin PCYC is the only Gymnastics Queensland affiliated club in Ayr and head coach Lisa Zabel said the team were delighted to receive the accreditation for the KinderGym and GymFun classes offered for children as young as 18 months and up to the age of seven.

“Our weekly KinderGym classes are proving very popular with locals as they allow children to learn the basic movement skills they so desperately need while learning about a number of different topics such as Aussie Animals, Things that Go and Rhythm,” Mrs Zabel said.

“The classes see kids roll, hop, jump and swing their way into the different activities and games which not only help develop kids physically but also benefit learning, concentration and brain development.”

Kym Dowdell, Gymnastics Queensland’s Chief Executive Officer commended the Burdekin PCYC team on their achievement and said there was no better time for parents to get their kids active with Australia battling the obesity statistics particularly amongst the younger generation.

“This isn’t about creating the next Olympian, it’s about recognizing the wonderful skills gymnastics gives children and the skills it offers them going forward,” Ms Dowdell said.

“LaunchPad contains a series of gymnastics-based, fundamental movement programs that enable children to be confident in their bodies, learn basic movement skills and progressively more complex movement patterns, as well as creating a pathway into all sports – all while having a great time.”

Burdekin PCYC not only offers the programs at the club but also to local Kindys and schools such as Burdekin Christian College and Big Bird’s Kindy.

Jackie Kiloh from Big Bird’s Kindy says the children really benefitted from regular classes and visits to Burdekin PCYC.

“The KinderGym program is enjoyable, challenging, vibrant, exciting and educational on many different levels,” said Mrs Kiloh.

“This particular program fits perfectly with our personal philosophy of developing every child’s gross and fine motor skills in order to accommodate their true potential in learning for the future.”
