Brisbane to host home-grown international garden show

Queensland will soon have its own gardening event to rival the likes of the Sydney Royal Flower and Garden Show and Melbourne’s International Flower and Garden Show, with organisers of the inaugural Brisbane International Garden Show announcing the new event will bloom to life between 8 and 11 October 2015.
Event Manager Marion Beazley said the event would showcase Queensland’s unique gardening style, providing information about gardening in a sub-tropical climate and supplying tens-of-thousands of plant species for sale over the course of the four-day show.
“The Brisbane International Garden Show will bring together high profile gardening experts delivering informative talks and workshops, landscape garden displays and hundreds of exhibitors showcasing a broad range of plants and gardening products,” Ms Beazley said.
“We’re delighted to be welcoming acclaimed landscape gardener and media personality Jim Fogarty to the speaker line-up which is a real coup for the inaugural event given he is recognised as a leader in his field — both in Australia and internationally.”
“Jim boasts over 30 internationally recognised design awards including a gold medal for his garden display at the renowned Chelsea Flower Show and the title of ‘Best in Show’ from the 2011 Gardening World Cup in Japan.”
“At the Brisbane International Garden Show, Jim will judge the landscape design competition which sees some of Queensland’s top landscapers put their design skills to the test and battling it out for the trophy. He will also deliver a number of presentations to inspire and educate attendees about transforming their own outdoor space and provide useful landscaping tips based on his wealth of experience.”
Ms Beazley said the idea for the Brisbane International Garden Show stemmed from the success she and her team have had in organising the annual Queensland Garden Expo on the Sunshine Coast, which is now in its 31st year.
“Over the past few years we’ve really seen a shift in the demographic of the event attendees with the majority of people travelling from outside the Sunshine Coast to attend; including a large number of city dwellers.”
“Many people living in metropolitan areas are now looking at ways to maximise their use of space and enhance their access to fresh produce by introducing a veggie patch or herb garden into their home or apartment. We therefore recognised a real demand to host this kind of event in a major city like Brisbane to cater to the budding green thumbs.”
Ms Beazley said she was also thrilled to have experienced horticulturalist Claire Bickle taking to the stage at the event, delivering information on caring for chickens, creating an aromatherapy garden and developing colonial-style cottage gardens using native plants.
“It’s a real coup to have these talented gardeners joining the line-up and we look forward to revealing the full program of speakers over the coming weeks.”
The event is set to incorporate more than 100 presentations across five stages, showcase the wares of over 200 nurseries and exhibitors, display countless plant varieties and attract tens-of-thousands of attendees.
“We’re delighted to be launching the Brisbane International Garden Show as we head into spring, which is a great time for nurseries to offer a fantastic range of plants and also to launch a number of new plants at the event,” Ms Beazley said.
“Whether it’s delivering insights into growing food in small spaces, providing information on getting children engaged in gardening or identifying the most suitable plants for growing in a sub-tropical climate, the inaugural Brisbane International Garden Show promises to cater for both gardening novices and seasoned gardeners.”
