Be a part of a world event with local focus

May 4, 2011

Over 5,000 festival goers are expected to join in celebrating the Sunshine Coast World Environment Day Festival which will be held on June 5 at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Each year World Environment Day is recognised around the world in over 100 countries making it one of the largest global environmental events of its kind. On the Sunshine Coast this FREE vibrant one-day festival focuses on acting as a catalyst for effective and sustainable change with some great family fun thrown in on the side.

The festival is one of Australia’s longest running environmental events and this year marks its 31st anniversary. Building on previous year’s success, the festival aims to reach a wider audience this year by delivering some new initiatives.

“Each year we make it our mission to seek out the latest and greatest in innovative sustainable businesses, products and initiatives,” said Executive Officer of the Sunshine Coast Environment Council, Wiebe ter Bals.

“This year we will have between 50-60 exhibitors across a number of themed areas. We encourage these displays to be interactive and hands on, so that people are able to learn more about certain technologies and be able to make more informed decisions when making a ‘green choice’. All festival goers will be called upon to take home three ideas to reduce their environmental footprint.”

“The theme for this year’s event is ‘A festival of Ideas’ and also marks the ‘International Year of the Forest’. To assist in translating these themes there will be a number of Idea Trees on the day encouraging people to leave ideas and take ideas to action change.”

One of the key events on the day will be the speaker’s forum where a panel of experts will engage with the audience in a Q&A style discussion on ‘Green Economy’. Included in the line up are acclaimed industry leaders Ms Cate Collins, Head of Sustainability at LendLease Australia; Assoc. Prof. Michelle Rosano, Chair of Industrial Ecology Department, Curtin University; Robert Pekin, Food Connect; Garrie Lette, Chief Investment Officer Catholic Super and Dr Haley Jones, Senior lecturer in Engineering at Australian National University.

Other highlights will include the educational hands-on workshops, entertainment and fun activities in the children’s area; the fleet of energy efficient cars that will be on show and being inspired by a selection of bush foods, slow foods and solar cooking.
