An evening with Dr Karl
Excitement is building for this year’s Living Smart ‘Glossies’ Awards evening on June 17 when the Coast’s most impressive contributors to sustainability are recognised.
Sunshine Coast Council will host the popular event at the newly opened Sustainability Interpretive Centre at Mooloolaba TAFE, where keynote speaker, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki will share his thoughts on how science can help us build a more sustainable future.
As a regular on radio and TV shows across Australia as well as on the BBC, Dr Karl has published 30 books and is currently the Julius Sumner Miller Fellow at Sydney University. His role is to ‘spread the word’ and enthuse the general population about all things scientific and his commitment to sustainability has long been known.
Dr Karl presented his first story on the Greenhouse Effect on radio in 1981, and wrote a story about it in his first book, ‘Great Moments in Science’, back in 1984. Dr Karl’s presentation on Greenhouse and Sustainability builds on this long experience.
“The facts are in. If Australia switches to renewables to make its electricity, that power will cost one third of the price of getting it from coal. We could have it up and running within 10 years of starting,” Dr Karl said.
Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones believes the event’s ability to attract such a high-profile speaker reflects the prestige associated with the Sunshine Coast’s premier sustainability accolades, the Glossies Awards.
“Council is committed to the Sunshine Coast being Australia’s most sustainable region and it is therefore fitting that this awards night, which recognises the residents and businesses who are helping us achieve this vision, is of the highest calibre,” Cr Jones said.
“I think we can look forward to an inspirational and entertaining presentation with Dr Karl raising some thought-provoking and hot issues with regard to renewables and sustainable innovation. I encourage those who are interested in learning more about sustainable outcomes from one of Australia’s most entertaining scientists to come along and join us for the evening.”
Those attending the awards will have the opportunity to network with like-minded people and nominees before the awards presentation. Eight awards will be presented including an inaugural induction into Glossies Hall of Fame where a local resident or business will be recognised for their long term dedication to achieving sustainable outcomes on the Sunshine Coast.
Other awards include the University of the Sunshine Coast Golden Glossy Awards recognising sustainability in building design and construction, the TAFE Resource Saver Award, the Edible Landscapes Award, the Sunshine Coast Council Sustainable Transport Award, the TAFE Living Smart Solutions Award, the Enviro Business Award, University of the Sunshine Coast Glossies Hall of Fame and the new Greening the Arts Award.
