Bed races see tight finish for the trophy

To celebrate International Nurses’ Day this Wednesday, teams of nurses from across the Sunshine Coast congregated at the Sunshine Coast Grammar School yesterday for the much anticipated bed races, but none could beat the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital’s ‘Heart Starters’ from winning the coveted Golden Bed Pan Trophy and $1,000 prize.
The various bed race teams from hospitals, nursing homes, community care organisations and universities ran, wrapped, grabbed and dodged their way to the finish line as fellow nurses and supporters cheered from the side-line.
The day culminated in an electric final between the two fastest teams on the track which saw the ‘Heart Starters’ take the trophy and the second prize go to last year’s winners, the Nambour Flyers from Nambour General Hospital. The Wooden Spoon was awarded to the Coolum Sassy Lassies from Coolum Waters Retirement Village .
RNS Managing Director, Sue Dunlop says everyone had a lot of fun and it was wonderful to see the competitive spirit amongst the various facilities.
“As much as we plan the day as a fun day out for nurses across the region, they get more competitive every year – and more colourful and creative in their outfits. This year we even had a little dog on the bed as a mascot!” said Sue.
“The day is about celebrating the great work our nurses do in our community and it was fantastic seeing everyone get involved. The atmosphere was really great.”
“There wouldn’t be an Australian who hasn’t personally been touched by the wonderful service our nurses provide – whether for themselves, family or friends. They are there for us when times are tough and this event gives us the opportunity to say thank you.”
Now in its fourth year the RNS Big Wrap, hosted by Regional Nursing Solutions (RNS), aims to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contribution nurses and health care workers make to the community.
Big Wrap celebrations commenced on 23 April when the RNS Big Wrap van set off on a 5,500km road trip to deliver over 5,000 gifts to nurses across Queensland between Cairns and Brisbane. The van will continue to deliver goodwill until International Nurses Day on May 12.
2010 has been officially declared by the United Nations as the International Year of the Nurse and also marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Florence Nightingale, who is celebrated for pioneering the foundations of the nursing profession.
